Jen's Travel Tips: General

1. Learn how to greet someone in their language, it shows effort and people will be more willing to help you when you need or request it.

2. Learn how to drive manual. Automatic cars are rare or more expensive; so you will find many cars overseas even luxury cars are manual. Invest the time to learn or teach yourself. You wouldn't want to be limited in the places you can travel to all because you don't have a driver or can't drive yourself.

3. Save yourself some time in the airport by checking in online (if available). You can also save time by signing up for a frequent traveler program like global entry (good for frequent national and international travelers) or TSA Pre-check (good for national travelers). If you sign up for global entry there is no need to sign up for TSA pre-check, it is included. These programs allow you to receive expedited security checks through participating airlines.

4. I recommend registering with the State Department's STEP Program. You can build your travel itinerary on the site, it gives you locations and information on US embassy's and consulates. You can also find visa, laws, safety, health and destination descriptions, etc. on all the countries you may want to visit. Signing up for this free service also allows the State Department the opportunity to assist you in case of an emergency.

5. If you plan on driving in a foreign country make sure you have an international driver permit (when required - AAA has this information). You won't be able to rent a car without it (but again it depends on the country, some don't require it). The permit essentially translates your drivers license for authorities.

6. I recommend getting a guided tour of the city by a local on your first day. They will be able to tell you where and where not to go. Additionally, you can also ask them about typical costs of everyday items (to make sure you are not scammed out of your hard earned money).

7. If you have a credit card, review your credit card benefits paperwork. Some credit card companies offer their card holders travel and car insurance, trip accident protection, etc. if your complete your transactions with it!
