DIY: Sugar Wax

If your wax specialist is unavailable or your favorite waxing service center is closed due to unforeseen circumstances you can use this DIY sugar wax to continue on with your normal hair removal routine. This sugar wax recipe is made from just 3 ingredients - water, lemon juice and granulated sugar. Yes, you read that right, this sugar wax is made from just 3 ingredients, making it simple, natural and environmentally friendly!

Did you know that sugar wax has roots in ancient Egypt and in middle eastern cultures?

Sugar wax is soft enough to penetrate into the pores where it adheres to the individual roots of hair and pulls them out. Unlike waxing, sugaring only pulls out the hairs and does not disturb the surface of the skin. Thus, sugaring is a more gentle hair removal method and when done correctly minimizes the amount of irritation to the area and pain experienced during the process.

Ingredients:

1 cup of sugar

1/4 cup of water

1/4 cup of lemon juice

Directions:

  1. In a medium sized saucepan place the water, sugar and lemon juice.

  2. Heat to a boil until the mixture reaches the soft crack stage or 270 to 289 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Pour into a lightly greased microwaveable bowl and cool to room temperature.

Remember to always use proper sugaring techniques such as cleaning and drying the area where you want to remove hair as well as pulling in the natural direction of your follicle’s growth pattern.

Jen’s Jewel:

When it comes to making sugar wax what you are essentially doing is making candy, I cooked my mixture until it was taffy-like. The use of a thermometer can really help you reach the correct sugar stage so that you do not under- or overcook your sugar wax. If you do not have a thermometer you can test your sugar stages by placing a small amount of the sugar mixture in a bowl of ice water.
